Unnatural tells the disturbing true story of Ernst Wagner, a German schoolteacher whose private world of shame, resentment, and paranoia ultimately erupted into one of the most horrifying crimes of the early 20th century.

On a rain-soaked September night in 1913, Wagner returned to the village of Mühlhausen dressed in black, his face concealed beneath his dead wife’s funeral veil. Armed with revolvers and convinced he was surrounded by enemies who had mocked and humiliated him for years, he set homes and barns ablaze and opened fire on villagers fleeing into the streets. By the time he was stopped, 20 people had been shot and nine were dead.

But the massacre was only the final stage of a plan that had begun hours earlier. Before setting out for Mühlhausen, Wagner murdered his wife and children in their beds, prepared letters explaining his actions, armed himself with stockpiled ammunition, and set off on a journey that was intended to end with even more members of his family dead.

As investigators and psychiatrists began unraveling Wagner’s story, an even more unsettling truth emerged.
